The Department of Health and social Care says it won’t reveal how many legal abortions have been carried out in the past five years.

A freedom of information request asked for the figures – but the department says publishing them may identify women who’ve undergone the procedure.

In its reply, the DHSC says fewer than 10 women a year were allowed legal terminations under laws dating back 22 years.

And it says the statistics are personal data which can’t be made public.
